AC Milan has unexpectedly encountered a goalkeeping predicament, leading to the prospect of Antonio Mirante taking the field against Juventus. According to reports from Calciomercato.com, this situation has arisen due to the suspension of Mike Maignan and Marco Sportiello’s two-month absence. As a result, the 40-year-old Mirante is poised to step in as the starting goalkeeper for the crucial ninth-round match against Juventus.
Mirante, Milan’s third-choice goalkeeper, is about to make his first competitive start for the club. His sole appearance for the team came in the closing moments of their victory over Hellas Verona at the end of the previous season.
It’s worth noting that Mirante hasn’t been a starting goalkeeper in a Serie A match since April 18, 2021, when he suffered a 3-1 defeat with Roma against Torino. After Sportiello’s arrival, it seemed likely that Mirante would leave Milan, but instead, he extended his contract for another year during the summer. His retention was primarily due to his value on the squad lists and his experience in case of emergencies, a situation that has now come to pass.
While Mirante has participated in various friendly matches for Milan, the most recent was in December 2022, during a 3-0 loss to PSV Eindhoven. Mirante’s football journey has seen him move through the youth sector of Juventus and play for clubs like Crotone, Siena (where he made his Serie A debut), Sampdoria, Parma, Bologna, and Roma.
