Just In: Spurs on the verge of making a hard-headed mistake this offseason

There’s no doubt among Spurs fans that the team has managed this rebuild well. While some impatient supporters might find the process lengthy, their desire for success in San Antonio is understandable given the five championships in 15 years. The complete overhaul of the team is already starting to pay off and will be beneficial in the long run.

However, the Spurs risk a setback if they don’t trade Keldon Johnson. Although Keldon brings a lot to the team in his current role, he could also be a valuable trade asset for San Antonio.

The Spurs should move Keldon while his value is high

He’s a young guard/forward capable of scoring, whether starting as a key offensive player or coming off the bench to support another star. The Kentucky Wildcat, at 24 years old, has relatively fresh legs and just completed his fifth NBA season, bringing a balance of youth and experience. His team-friendly contract makes him an attractive, ready-to-go addition for any team.

A player like Anfernee Simons from the Portland Trail Blazers could be a viable trade target, especially given reports that Portland is looking to move him or Jerami Grant before the season starts. Now is the ideal time to acquire a dynamic scorer like Simons.

With the influx of wing players like Stephon Castle, Harrison Barnes, and Vassell, Johnson’s offensive role in San Antonio has diminished, making him expendable. Trading Johnson would allow the Spurs to add reliable depth and shooting to their forward group, a crucial step in their rebuild.
