The Yankees are aiming to get back on track, supplementing the MLB trade deadline with a few critical injury returns. The plan has fueled a three-game winning streak thus far, though it should be noted that the Bombers were one strike away from losing another heartbreaking series in Boston before Trent Grisham delivered.
Unfortunately, injury recovery is never linear, as the Yankees discovered the hard way twice on Tuesday. As part of a pre-planned ramp up, Giancarlo Stanton will not start after returning to action on Monday; he will reportedly DH again in the series finale Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia.
In a more troubling development, Gerrit Cole will miss Tuesday’s scheduled start, making space for Will Warren’s MLB debut.
This is probably not news the Yankees wanted to spread while they were still courting Jack Flaherty.
The diagnosis is even stranger: “general body fatigue,” yet if you watched Cole get hammered by the Mets in his most recent start, you probably noticed something was wrong.

It might be an illness. It is possible that his body is not rebounding back adequately. It could mean “mid-summer beat up.” Regardless, Cole delivered an update before the Yankees could. He has no plans to hit the IL or even undergo tests, and he maintains it isn’t his barking elbow. Cole, who was rediscovering his groove a few weeks ago against the Rays and Orioles, seems to lose it once more during the Subway Series versus his adversary/the team that has struck him the hardest throughout his career.

Warren will make his MLB debut after losing the offseason’s fifth starting competition to Luis Gil. While it appears to have been the right decision, Warren may still use his nasty sweeper against a Phillies lineup that was anticipating a tired Cole. Despite struggling in Triple-A this season (a 6.11 ERA overall), Warren has rebounded in his last two starts, allowing two earned runs in 11 innings and striking out 17.
We don’t know much, but we do know one thing: Warren won’t be dealt tonight.
