Newcastle United is reportedly planning to secure the services of a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window to cover for Sandro Tonali, who is currently facing an investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation related to illegal betting activity.
The Telegraph suggests that the Magpies might explore the option of a loan move for Ruben Neves, who currently plays for the Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
Newcastle has expressed their support for Sandro Tonali during the investigation and has mentioned that he is cooperating with the relevant authorities. However, in case Tonali faces a ban, the club is preparing to make a move to strengthen their midfield options at St James’ Park.
Ruben Neves is currently associated with Al-Hilal, a club owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which also has ties with Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, as well as Newcastle in England. Neves is a well-known figure in the Premier League, having previously played for Wolves from 2017 to 2023.

During his time at Wolves, Neves made 253 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 13 assists, earning recognition as an iconic and wonderful player among Wolves’ fans. Since joining Al-Hilal, Neves has made 11 appearances, contributing one goal and one assist.
His extensive Premier League experience and top-level skills make him an attractive option for Newcastle, especially considering their somewhat inconsistent performance in the Premier League this season, where they currently hold the eighth position with three losses in eight top-flight fixtures.
Newcastle is poised to secure a suitable replacement if Sandro Tonali faces a lengthy ban, and the January transfer window will reveal whether Ruben Neves becomes part of their squad.
