Brent Pry, the football coach at Virginia Tech, fired three of his assistant coaches two weeks ago. Defensive coordinator Chris Marve, offensive line coach Ron Crook, and strength coach Dwight Galt IV were all dismissed. Marve and Crook were two names that came as little surprise given their respective seasons in 2024.
After a disappointing season, you have to believe Pry is making changes because his seat is becoming very hot. With his issues with in-game management, five one-score defeats, and a 1-12 record in one-score games, his margin for error may be narrowing. After firing three assistant coaches, the former Penn State defensive coordinator must make his next hires correctly.
On Monday, he formally hired an offensive line coach from a Big 12 school.
Virginia Tech recruited West Virginia offensive line coach Matt Moore to replace Crook, and at first glance, this appears to be a solid hire by Pry. Moore has had a lot of success at Morgantown and has 19 years of experience coaching in Division 1. He has produced some NFL players under his supervision.
“I am thrilled to add Matt Moore to our staff,” Pry stated in a press release. “He has extensive experience coaching offensive lines at the Power Four level.” His demonstrated ability to build powerful, gritty offensive line groups that play with excellent physicality will be a huge benefit to our team. His leadership and experience are perfectly aligned with our vision for Virginia Tech football.
The Hokies will need his significant experience, since the offensive line has been a huge issue for the Hokies over the last two years. Moore’s job will be to rebuild a line that is losing players to the transfer portal and those who have reached the end of their eligibility. Adding players through the portal is nearly mandatory, as is assembling a line to defend returning quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson. Don’t be shocked to see some of Moore’s West Virginia teammates follow him to Blacksburg.
This hire appears to be strong, which is just what Pry requires as his seat becomes increasingly competitive in 2025. Moore’s track record indicates that this is a significant boost, and supporters should be delighted about the hire. The next stage is to assign him some players to develop as quickly as feasible.
