JUST IN: Panthers Confirms Major Replacement For Bryce Young

Bryce Young’s progress since reclaiming the starting quarterback role has been a positive development, even with his struggles in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys. However, that likely won’t deter general manager Dan Morgan from exploring options to introduce competition in the quarterback room this offseason if the opportunity arises.

Most analysts expect Young to get another chance in 2025. His improved confidence and determination following a challenging Week 3 benching have been encouraging. Still, with backup Andy Dalton set to hit free agency this spring, the Panthers may seek a veteran quarterback to bolster the roster.

Morgan should monitor the situation with the Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Kirk Cousins closely. Cousins was Atlanta’s headline acquisition last offseason, signing a deal with $100 million guaranteed. However, the Falcons also drafted Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After some lackluster performances from Cousins over the past five weeks, head coach Raheem Morris decided to bench him in favor of Penix. With his high upside, Penix will lead the team for the next three games, potentially guiding Atlanta’s playoff push and solidifying his role as their long-term starter.

Kirk Cousins would raise urgency in the Carolina Panthers QB room

Kirk Cousins’ future with the Atlanta Falcons is increasingly uncertain. Trading him appears highly unlikely due to the significant financial burden tied to his contract, leaving a release as the most plausible route—though it would involve a substantial dead cap hit for the franchise.

At 36 years old, Cousins is undoubtedly in the twilight of his career. However, given that he’s returning from a torn Achilles, his 2024 struggles could be excused, making him an intriguing option for the Panthers. If released, Cousins would still be earning from his Falcons contract, potentially making him a cost-effective acquisition for Carolina.

This scenario hinges on Cousins’ willingness to adapt to a new role. There would be no assurances of him starting over Bryce Young, the Panthers’ 2023 No. 1 overall pick. Instead, he’d either enter a true competition for the starting job during training camp or serve as Young’s backup—a proposition that could deter Cousins, depending on the offers he receives elsewhere. His inconsistent performances this year have diminished his leverage in negotiations, yet his experience and career production still make him an attractive option for teams seeking a veteran quarterback.

If Cousins is determined to redeem his reputation, joining a team where he has a path to starting might be critical. Panthers head coach Dave Canales has a history of working with experienced quarterbacks, and Cousins would likely be among the best options available if Atlanta parts ways with him.

For Carolina, acquiring Cousins could also light a fire under Young. Since entering the league, Young hasn’t faced significant challenges to his status as a starter. The presence of a proven veteran like Cousins—who boasts nearly 43,000 career passing yards—could push him to elevate his game further, much like his positive response to being benched earlier in the season.

While Cousins’ availability remains uncertain, it’s becoming increasingly likely he won’t return to the Falcons in 2025. General manager Dan Morgan and other league executives will undoubtedly monitor his situation closely. Whether the Panthers ultimately make a move depends on how the offseason unfolds.
