Breaking News: Yankees To Re-Up Trade for $260 Million Star After Rejected Offer

Could the Yankees be aiming for a two-for-one deal? As their roster adjustments continue this MLB offseason, the team still has notable gaps to address, particularly on the infield. While newcomer Cody Bellinger could take over first base, the Yankees would prefer to slot him into centerfield, allowing Aaron Judge to return to his natural position in right field.

This approach leaves two major infield vacancies. If Jazz Chisholm shifts back to second base, where he’s more comfortable after filling in at third late last season, the Yankees would need to secure a third baseman and potentially a first baseman as well.

The third base spot is proving to be the bigger challenge, but the Yankees appear determined to resolve it. According to MLB.com, they recently made an offer to the Cardinals for veteran Nolan Arenado, an eight-time All-Star with 10 Gold Gloves. However, the proposal, centered around veteran pitcher Marcus Stroman, was turned down by St. Louis.

Arenado’s No-Trade Clause Complicates Matters

Acquiring Arenado isn’t straightforward. He holds a no-trade clause and must approve any deal, even if the Cardinals agree to it. Arenado, who has three years left on an eight-year, $260 million contract signed with Colorado, has already rejected a potential trade to Houston.

However, the Yankees might have a plan to sweeten the pot—targeting both Arenado and his Cardinals teammate and friend, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

MLB.com reports that Goldschmidt’s presence in New York could influence Arenado to waive his no-trade clause. The Yankees previously approached the Cardinals about Arenado but were rebuffed when they offered Stroman as the centerpiece of the trade.

Adding Goldschmidt and Arenado

The Yankees’ challenge is twofold: crafting a trade package appealing enough to the Cardinals and convincing Arenado to approve the deal. This won’t be easy, as the Yankees’ trade assets are limited following recent acquisitions like Bellinger and closer Devin Williams.

Still, bringing in Goldschmidt and sweetening their offer for Arenado could pave the way. Such a move would address both infield vacancies and strengthen the Yankees’ lineup.

As MLB.com notes, adding Goldschmidt and Arenado would allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move to second base, solidify the infield with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, and provide veteran protection in the batting order for reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge.
