As Florida Football gears up for the Gasparilla Bowl, the team remains active in addressing roster needs through the transfer portal.
After securing a wide receiver last night, the Gators are now focusing on the safety position and are set to host a potential addition for a visit this weekend.
Florida Football: Safety Valve
A 6’3″ safety, played 393 snaps for UAB this past season after transferring from Alabama State, where he spent two years. Despite taking over 200 fewer snaps in 2024 compared to 2023, Maddox maintained similar production, recording 44 tackles, four pass breakups, and a standout 99-yard pick-six.
In coverage, Maddox allowed 18 receptions on 28 targets without surrendering a touchdown, showcasing his reliability as a coverage safety—an area where Florida struggled in 2024.
While Maddox isn’t among the top-rated safeties, he could bolster Florida’s depth in a position that faced challenges last season. Florida brought in Asa Turner, DJ Douglas, and Trikweze Bridges from the portal in 2024. Turner was sidelined after an injury against Miami, Douglas underperformed, and Bridges was effective but eventually moved to corner due to injuries in the secondary.
The Gators also explored Zechariah Poyser from Jacksonville State, but he has since committed to Miami. Currently, Gregory Smith, Bryce Thornton, and Jordan Castell are Florida’s primary safeties for 2025, with Aaron Gates and Sharif Denson also seeing limited action at the position last season.
Maddox, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is scheduled to visit Gainesville this weekend, according to Swamp247.
