During the first week and a half of the 2024 winter transfer portal, Virginia Tech has been relatively quiet in securing commitments. However, the team has been quite active in terms of player departures, leaving head coach Brent Pry and his staff scrambling to assemble a roster for the 2025 season.
On defense, the Hokies have suffered significant losses in the secondary with Mansoor Delane and Mose Phillips entering the portal. Delane, who chose to transfer instead of declaring for the NFL Draft, quickly attracted attention and committed to LSU. Phillips, a standout performer for Virginia Tech this season, also entered the portal in search of a new team for next year.
These departures leave the Hokies with a depleted secondary heading into the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota on Jan. 3 in Charlotte. While this creates challenges, it also provides an opportunity for younger players to gain valuable experience against a strong Golden Gophers squad. To address roster gaps for next season, Pry and his staff have been evaluating potential transfers, securing a commitment on Wednesday from a player joining from an ACC rival.
Clemson safety Sherrod Covil, Jr. commits to Virginia Tech
Earlier this week, Virginia Tech welcomed Clemson transfer Sherrod Covil Jr., a significant addition for the upcoming season. The Chesapeake native appeared in 11 games for Clemson this season, including one start, and recorded 12 tackles, nine of which were solo. Over his three years with the Tigers, Covil accumulated 36 tackles across 32 games.
Virginia Tech’s roster will require several key additions for next season, and securing Sherrod Covil Jr. is an excellent first step. His commitment marks a promising start in addressing the team’s needs for the upcoming season.
