Former San Francisco Giants outfielder, a fan favorite within the organization, has signed with the New York Yankees, according to the team’s transaction log.
Munguia’s journey began when the Giants signed him as a 16-year-old prospect out of Nicaragua in 2015, giving him a $17,000 signing bonus. Because only bonuses exceeding $10,000 count against the international signing pool, Munguia’s just cleared that threshold.
This move to the Yankees marks the end of Munguia’s time with the Giants, the only organization he’s played for in his professional career.
Known for his energy, speed, and exceptional bat-to-ball skills, Munguia stood out early in his career. In his second pro season, he hit .331/.398/.458 with one home run and 19 RBI across 164 plate appearances in the Arizona League, walking nearly as often (17 times) as he struck out (18 times).
Over seven minor league seasons, Munguia consistently delivered at the plate, posting a career slash line of .294/.359/.412 with a 7.3% walk rate, a 9.9% strikeout rate, and a .118 ISO. While his offensive numbers were solid, he displayed limited power, never hitting more than 10 home runs in a season, though his speed helped him notch plenty of extra-base hits.
Munguia’s career has been marked by perseverance. In 2023, he suffered a personal tragedy when his brother, Francisco Antonio, died in a car accident. Though he initially planned to return home to grieve, his family encouraged him to stay in camp. Shortly after, he was called up to major league camp and hit a home run, creating an emotional moment for him and his family.
In 2024, Munguia made a strong impression during spring training, collecting 16 hits, including a home run, in 39 at-bats. His performance earned him the Barney Nugent Award, and he came close to making the Giants’ Opening Day roster.
After reaching free agency earlier this offseason, Munguia likely chose the Yankees for better playing time opportunities. While he embarks on a new chapter, many within the Giants organization will undoubtedly continue rooting for his success.
