Ground-breaking: Yankees and Mets agree to blockbuster trade for $152 million star

The New York Yankees need to make a few more roster adjustments to solidify their backup plan after Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets. They have two main strategies to consider: either play Cody Bellinger at first base and bring in another outfielder, or use Bellinger in the outfield and acquire a first baseman.

Leo Morgenstern of MLB Trade Rumors recently identified the Yankees as “likely suitors” for Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso, who is projected to land a $152 million deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. However, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi suggested the Yankees might prioritize a shorter-term deal, naming Christian Walker as a potential target. “Walker seems to be ‘more of a priority,'” Morgenstern noted, but added that Alonso “remains in play for the Bronx Bombers.”

Mets Predicted to Retain Pete Alonso on $135 Million Deal

Even after acquiring Cody Bellinger from the Cubs on Tuesday, the Yankees’ needs remain clear. While Bellinger can handle first base, he’s more valuable in the outfield, particularly in center field, which allows Aaron Judge to return to right. This leaves a gap at first base, as the team looks to replace Anthony Rizzo.

Although signing Alonso would be the most exciting option, it’s not the most likely. The Yankees have already made significant financial commitments this offseason, making a more cost-effective move for Christian Walker a practical choice. Still, if Walker isn’t available and Alonso remains on the market, the Yankees would likely outbid other contenders, especially after the Mets’ hefty investment in Soto.
