The New York Yankees may soon address their need at third base, shifting their offseason focus from pitching to bolstering the infield. After acquiring Cody Bellinger, the Yankees are reportedly exploring options to bring in a premier third baseman. According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Yankees are targeting two key stars.
“These two players are directly tied to each other, as they represent the two best options at third base between the free-agent and trade markets,” Feinsand wrote. “The Yankees are also believed to have interest in both players. Either of whom would take over at third base, shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second.”
Bregman, a free agent, could be signed without surrendering assets, while Arenado would require navigating his current contract and no-trade clause. However, Feinsand noted that Arenado may be open to waiving his no-trade clause for a move to a contender like the Yankees.
Arenado has three years and $74 million remaining on his deal, with $10 million being paid by the Rockies as part of his trade to the Cardinals in 2021. If acquired, he would bring elite defense and a powerful bat to the Yankees’ lineup.
Adding either Bregman or Arenado would solve two problems for New York. Not only would it solidify the third base position, but it would also allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move to second base, filling another key infield need. Such a move would significantly improve the Yankees’ roster heading into the 2025 season.
Yankees GM Has Discussed Signing Bregman
The New York Yankees have publicly acknowledged their interest in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed during a December 13 media conference call that the team has engaged in conversations regarding the former Houston Astros star.
“My job is to make us as quality as we can year in and year out,” Cashman stated. “We are going to vet every opportunity out there. First and foremost, we will find out if that can match. He’s been a thorn in our side for years, along with other people’s side. He’s now into free agency.”
Cashman went on to acknowledge discussions with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras. “I have had a conversation or two with Scott Boras,” he said. “I’ll acknowledge that, with a lot of his clients, including Alex Bregman. Certainly respect the player, his ability, and how much winning he has been a part of. But, that is as far as I will say at this point.”
Bregman’s résumé speaks for itself: a two-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, and the recipient of both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger. His consistent excellence and championship pedigree make him a highly coveted asset as he explores his options in free agency.
New York Acquires Bellinger
The Yankees have been active this offseason, strengthening their pitching staff with Max Fried and Devin Williams while making a significant addition by acquiring Cody Bellinger. Bellinger’s versatility will benefit the team as he contributes both in the outfield and at first base, adding to his solid performance last season with the Cubs.
