The transfer site has been available for seven days, and players are starting to sign with other institutions for the 2025 season. Virginia Tech has been silent in terms of receiving promises via the portal so far.
Like Hokies coach Brent Pry, Virginia coach Tony Elliott is under fire for the 2017 season after the Cavaliers missed bowl eligibility yet again. Virginia, like Tech, has lost some of its key players to the portal, including quarterback Anthony Colandrea.
The outspoken signal caller did not participate in the team’s 37-17 regular-season loss to Blacksburg a few weeks ago. Elliott quickly found a new quarterback for next season.
Chandler Morris of North Texas, one of the portal’s top quarterbacks statistically, committed to Virginia on Monday, giving the Cavaliers a man behind center with a strong arm. This seems like a significant addition for Elliott.
Morris ranks among the top quarterbacks this season in terms of metrics. He finished fourth nationally in touchdown passes with 31, trailing only Colorado’s Shedueur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik. Morris finished fifth in the nation in passing yards per game, averaging 314 yards.
Morris has only one year of eligibility left, and he’ll be hoping to end the Cavaliers’ bowl drought. Elliott is certainly feeling the heat in Charlottesville and moving quickly through the portal, as he has added some pieces to help the Cavaliers jump over the hump in 2025. There is still time in the portal, but Virginia is rapidly narrowing the gap on the Hokies this off-season, only a week into it.
