One Virginia Tech football player is taking home some hardware after being awarded the top Division 1 player in the Commonwealth.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland is the newest winner of the Dudley Award, having ended his last season at Virginia Tech with 16 sacks, the second most in the nation.
APR received 13 of the 14 first-place votes from sports journalists around the state, comfortably beating out other candidates Jonas Sanker of UVA and Alonza Barnett of JMU.
With the victory, APR becomes the first Hokie to receive the Dudley Award since David Wilson in 2011.
“I am truly humbled and honored to receive the Dudley Award,” he tells us. “I’d like to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for their support and belief in me. Thank you to the Richmond Touchdown Club for considering me. The opportunity for a Virginia native to return home and play for Virginia Tech for the last two years has been truly amazing. “Thank you, and go Hokies.”
Jada Byers of Virginia Union also won the Lanier Award for the second time.
This prize is bestowed to the best Division II college football player.
