The race to sign major top star is about to begin, with the Japanese star pitcher expected to meet with teams in the coming weeks. While the St. Louis Cardinals haven’t been directly tied to him, a comment from his agent, Joel Wolfe, might open the door for the Cardinals to enter the competition for the potential ace.
Joel Wolfe, who also represents Nolan Arenado, suggested that Roki Sasaki might benefit from a “soft landing,” making St. Louis an appealing option. While the St. Louis media is often criticized for avoiding hard-hitting questions, this could work in the Cardinals’ favor if Sasaki values such an environment when choosing a team.
Historically, Japanese players have tended to sign with coastal teams when making the jump to Major League Baseball. However, reports indicate that Sasaki’s agent has not yet discussed his preferred location.
Sasaki has mentioned that he pays attention to a team’s overall success. While the Cardinals have struggled in recent years, their 11 championships and rich history might make St. Louis an enticing option for the star pitcher.
Sasaki might also be influenced by the presence of Lars Nootbaar, who became a standout figure during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Nootbaar’s leadership and popularity among players on Team Japan, where Sasaki also competed, could make St. Louis a more appealing destination.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak recently highlighted the team’s focus on reducing payroll in 2025 while developing young talent. At just 23 years old, Sasaki fits both priorities. Signing as an international amateur free agent, he would likely come at a cost-effective rate, making him a valuable addition for any team.
Mozeliak also stated that the Cardinals intend to retain closer Ryan Helsley and starter Erick Fedde, a move that frustrated some fans who are advocating for a full youth movement. However, if Sasaki were to join the roster, the team could exceed expectations, with Helsley and Fedde providing valuable support in a more competitive rotation.
Though the Cardinals have not been seen as serious contenders for Sasaki, recent comments from the pitcher and his agent, Joel Wolfe, should give fans reason to hope that St. Louis might enter the conversation.
