Contract Rivalry: Yankees, Mets in bidding war for another All-Star

The New York Yankees and New York Mets are once again competing for the same All-Star talent.

Fresh off the Mets securing Juan Soto over the Yankees on Sunday, reports from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon on Monday revealed that both teams are in discussions to trade for Chicago White Sox pitcher.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox are also reportedly interested, but the Yankees and Mets are considered the frontrunners, with their pursuit described as the most aggressive.

Crochet was a rare highlight in an otherwise dismal 2024 season for the White Sox. He was the team’s sole All-Star, posting a 3.58 ERA, 209 strikeouts, and a 1.07 WHIP over 28 starts.

For the Mets, adding Crochet could bring stability to a rotation with significant uncertainties. They recently lost Luis Severino to a surprising deal with the Oakland A’s, and Sean Manaea remains a free agent. Meanwhile, presumed ace Kodai Senga is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he made just one start.

The Yankees, with a more stable rotation led by Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, face a different challenge: replacing the offensive production lost with Soto’s departure. While pursuing Crochet, they are also exploring other major moves to address this gap.
