The New York Yankees will not want to waste any time switching to a Juan Soto backup plan. After Soto joined the Mets, reports about the Yankees’ interest in outfielders began to circulate. The Bronx Bombers might sign a top free agent outfielder or try to make a trade for one. FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently pushed the Yankees to make a big trade for Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki as an emergency backup for Soto. “The Chicago Cubs, who are driven sellers, have put Seiya Suzuki up for trade.
Suzuki hit.283/.366/.482/.848 with 21 home runs in 512 at-bats this year despite dealing with an oblique injury that caused his numbers to decline for a short period of time. Suzuki’s.848 OPS ranks him 18th in that category, surpassing free agency talents like Santander, Teoscar Hernandez, and Jurickson Profar,” Mountz said. “Suzuki is owed $19 million per season for the next two seasons before hitting the open market.” Suzuki is certainly an intriguing alternative. The Cubs would most likely be willing to eat a significant portion of his contract in order to remove him from the roster. It would also be unlikely to require a massive prospect haul in exchange for him.
It would be the best of both worlds for the Yankees since he might be inexpensive financially and in the transaction.
It is hardly the mega-deal that Yankees supporters would prefer, but it is likely to be a minor move in an offseason full with trades. Suzuki, in this scenario, would not be the Yankees’ prized treasure this offseason.
