Ex-Bills Star Says Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Responsible for Ending His Career

Many players have learned the hard way not to underestimate the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes until the clock displays all zeros. Perhaps no one understands that lesson better than Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has been personally tortured by Mahomes and his teammates in the playoffs three of the last four years. Former receiver Emmanuel Sanders was on one of those Bills teams with Allen, and during a recent interview on FS1’s “The Facility,” he mentioned how he lost to Mahomes in the AFC division round of the playoffs in 2021. Buffalo seized a 36-33 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

However, following the subsequent kickoff, Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill for 19 yards and Travis Kelce for 25 yards, setting Harrison Butker up to tie the game as time expired.

Mahomes and the Chiefs eventually won in overtime, and Sanders acknowledged that was the game that pushed him to retire.

“I still remember, after we scored, my family was going crazy,” Sanders told ESPN. “I urged them to calm down because I’ve been in the division with Pat, and you have to play him for four quarters. In my heart, I knew.”He’s a bad boy.”I retired following the game. Do you know how many times Patrick Mahomes has made me cry? I was in the AFC West when the 49ers won the Super Bowl, and it made me cry despite being an adult. I retired, dog. I am up here right now because of him.”

Though Sanders fell short in the 2021 season, he did win a Super Bowl in 2016 with the Denver Broncos. Sanders finished his NFL career with 704 receptions, 9,245 yards, and 51 touchdowns in 12 seasons with the Bills, Broncos, 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New Orleans Saints. He also appeared in the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2016.
