The Detroit Red Wings have had a challenging start to the season, and one major trade suggests they make a significant move to strengthen their defense. Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a fan suggested the Red Wings trade for Jacob Trouba from the New York Rangers.
A proposed trade scenario has the Detroit Red Wings acquiring Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko from the New York Rangers. In exchange, the Rangers would receive Joe Veleno and Justin Holl.
The proposed trade would be a blockbuster, with the Detroit Red Wings acquiring Rangers captain Jacob Trouba and former second-overall pick Kaapo Kakko in exchange for Joe Veleno and Justin Holl.
Trouba, linked to Detroit in trade rumors this past summer, is in the sixth year of his seven-year, $56 million contract. While no trade materialized earlier, his name remains in discussions. This season, he has posted six points (0 goals, 6 assists) in 23 games.
Kakko, drafted second overall in 2019, has struggled to meet expectations. Currently on a one-year, $2.4 million deal, he will remain a restricted free agent (RFA) after this season. In 23 games this year, Kakko has recorded 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists).
For the Rangers, the primary motivation would be shedding Trouba’s hefty contract. However, they would also gain Veleno, a former first-round pick (30th overall in 2018), who could contribute as a third-line forward. Justin Holl, in the second year of a three-year, $10.2 million contract, would likely serve as a depth defenseman (sixth or seventh in the rotation) but is included to balance the salaries in the trade.
