The St. Louis Cardinals are entering a rebuilding phase, but some are calling it a “reload” instead of a full rebuild, suggesting the team doesn’t plan to dismantle its roster entirely. There has been speculation that players such as Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Ryan Helsley could be traded in the coming weeks. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that St. Louis is pursuing a smaller-scale rebuild than initially anticipated.
Instead of trading off all their veteran players, Nightengale notes that the Cardinals are focusing on moving just one key veteran. He writes, “The St. Louis Cardinals are planning to reload – but not completely rebuild – with Nolan Arenado the only high-priced player they are shopping.” Arenado has three years and $52 million left on his contract, but the Colorado Rockies are responsible for $4 million of that in each of the final three years.
There’s strong trade potential for Arenado, especially if the Cardinals agree to absorb some of his contract. His market will likely heat up after free-agent signings like Willy Adames and Alex Bregman. Possible trade destinations for Arenado include the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox, though other teams may emerge as potential suitors.
