Former Virginia Tech Football Player Sends ‘Surprise’ Message to Brent Pry

Frustration is growing both within and outside of the Virginia Tech football program. With high expectations for the 2024 season, including speculation of becoming a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff, the season is spiraling out of control.

Following a 31-28 loss against Duke on Saturday night, the Hokies are 5-6 moving into the Commonwealth Cup, which will be held at home against Virginia on Thanksgiving Weekend. Brent Pry’s squad is playing just to become bowl-eligible, rather than competing for a potential at-large berth in the CFP or a major bowl game. No one expected this when the season began on Labor Day Weekend at Vanderbilt.

After losing against the Blue Devils, Hokies supporters were understandably unhappy and outraged. One former Virginia Tech offensive lineman took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with the program’s direction in Year 3 under Pry and his staff.

After another painful loss in 2024, former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Sergio Render took to his X account to express his dissatisfaction and anxiety about where the Hokies are going after a dismal season with so much expectation.

He is not wrong. Beating Virginia on Thanksgiving Weekend to earn bowl eligibility is becoming tiresome. It’s even more exhausting in a season in which the Hokies have a strong roster and, despite injuries, are facing the real chance of not extending their season past the Cavaliers.

What should aggravate Virginia Tech fans even more is that SMU enters the ACC for the first time and is the only undefeated team in the conference, as well as the ACC Championship Game. With this season’s schedule, returning talent, plus transfer portal additions, Virginia Tech should not be in this position.

Pry will tell you that getting to a bowl game is beneficial to the program and the future because of the extra preparation and game time, but Render is correct that Virginia being the Super Bowl of the season is not the route the program should be taking right now.
