Virginia Tech Football: Head Coach Brent Pry Makes ‘Stunning’ Decision that will Excite Fans

After the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was ousted in the second round of the NIT by Ohio State last March, head coach Mike Young experienced a huge departure of players through the transfer portal. That forced the veteran coach to work hard in the gateway to complete his roster for the 2024-25 season.

The Virginia Tech football team has two games remaining in the 2024 season and is 5-5 after 10 games, which is disappointing given all of the off-season fanfare.

They had a high level of retention, as well as major transfer portal additions, and it was hoped that they would be a dark horse in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. Instead, they are left fighting for bowl eligibility, needing to win one of their final two games.

The Hokies received their second bye of the season this weekend, ahead of a matchup against Duke and hosting Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend. Brent Pry, the head coach, met with the media on Tuesday to discuss what he and his staff did during the off week.

Pry stated that he and his team met with players during the off-week to re-recruit their own locker room in case other schools with larger NIL budgets came calling.

This is the modern era of collegiate sports, particularly football and basketball, and the third-year coach does not want Young to replicate his performance on the football field as he did on the basketball court. Making that statement makes you wonder what is going on inside the walls of Blacksburg and whether there are dissatisfied players looking to leave next month.

We may get a clearer picture of what to expect when gamers cross the portal sooner rather than later. If the Hokies win a sixth game and become bowl-eligible, a handful of players may opt out of the game, which did not occur last season. Things might get quite interesting with the program as soon as two weeks from now.
