According to Josh Yohe of *The Athletic*, Pittsburgh top star is shaping up to be the Pittsburgh Penguins’ most likely trade candidate. In his recent article, Yohe states, “he is as good as gone,” and identifies the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, both in the Pacific Division, as the teams most interested in acquiring the defenseman.
With his contract set to expire next summer and a significant payday likely awaiting him in free agency, the Pittsburgh Penguins are considering trading the dependable defenseman. Despite aspirations of being a playoff contender this season, Josh Yohe of *The Athletic* notes that “reality has set in for the organization’s front office,” prompting them to start shopping players. Pettersson is among several names rumored to be on the move.
According to Yohe, both the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks have shown interest in Pettersson, with league sources confirming their willingness to pursue him if the price is right. Yohe adds:
“Marcus Pettersson is the most likely candidate to be traded,” writes Josh Yohe of *The Athletic*. “League sources indicated that the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks are interested in the lanky defenseman, and there’s every reason to believe other teams will covet him as well.”
Marcus Pettersson’s defensive skills and experience make him a compelling trade target. The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly been searching for a player like him for much of the season. While the Edmonton Oilers were initially more focused on acquiring a right-shot defenseman, Darnell Nurse’s recent injury and concerns about the team’s overall depth may have shifted their priorities, increasing their interest in Pettersson.
Pettersson Won’t Be Cheap, Can the Oilers and Canucks Afford the Asking Price?
Although a trade seems inevitable, the Penguins are unlikely to part with Marcus Pettersson without receiving significant value in return. Pittsburgh recognizes that Pettersson could strengthen the blue line for either the Oilers or Canucks, and with both teams in the same division, the Penguins may be hoping for a bidding war to drive up the price.
The key question now is how much either team is willing to offer to acquire him.
