Gil, who earned 15 first-place votes to Cowser’s 13, becomes the first Yankees pitcher to win the award since Dave Righetti in 1981. Gil’s rise to Rookie of the Year status is a story of resilience and opportunity. After starting the spring in minor-league camp, the right-hander’s chances of making the big-league roster seemed slim. However, a sudden elbow injury to ace Gerrit Cole opened the door. Gil seized the moment, dazzling in spring training, including an eight-strikeout performance against the Phillies that caught the attention of Yankees manager Aaron Boone and the front office.
From there, Gil delivered a historic rookie season. In May, he was named both Pitcher and Rookie of the Month, showcasing ace-level dominance while filling Cole’s spot in the rotation. By June, Gil had reeled off seven consecutive wins, compiling a stunning 1.82 ERA with opponents hitting a mere .129 against him.
Though occasional command issues challenged him, Gil finished the season with remarkable numbers: a 3.50 ERA, a 15-7 record, 171 strikeouts, and an MLB-best 17 starts allowing one or no runs.
On the National League side, Pirates phenom Paul Skenes took home Rookie of the Year honors, with Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill and Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio rounding out the finalists.
