This one made me think quite a bit. Would the current personnel even consider hiring someone new under a new regime?
As you might expect, I pay close attention to the “Hokies Twitter” feed. Most of it is rather general. “Fire Brent Pry” . “Member Beamer” . “Nike Pro Combat Black was the Best” . You know, regular internet content. The X platform occasionally provides you with the tiniest sliver of information. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I tend to overanalyze. When I spotted this little nugget on X, I did a spit take.
Jerod Evans was a total beast for the newcomers in the room. In 2016, he guided the Hokies to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game. That was Justin Fuente’s penultimate year at HBC. It turned out to be Evans’ final year at Blacksburg, departing Virginia Tech with one year of eligibility. That has always been a question mark for me. Why did he leave? Why did he leave a program to be a mid to low-round NFL quarterback at best? He signed a UDFA contract with the Eagles but never found a home. He was a nice balance of size and quickness, with a strong arm.
When I first read the tweet, I wasn’t sure who Evans was referring about. Evans began his college career at the Air Force Academy. After injuring his ACL, he attended Trinity Valley Community College. All he did was break more records than Michael Jackson.
When he ended up at Virginia Tech, I was overjoyed. The Hokies had an electrifying season in 2016. With a new coach and a new franchise quarterback, the possibilities were endless. He pushed the Hokies to their utmost and had Clemson on the ropes for the whole of the championship game. I am more curious about why he left in the first place than why he wants to return.
“How different would the Justin Fuente era be looked at if Evans had returned for his senior season?”
Evans was a quarterback you could have faith in. He looked the part. He occasionally took over games, but most importantly, he was a leader. Clearly, X Hokie fans want him back in some capacity. It did not take me long to notice this significant response:
