The second bye week of Virginia Tech football’s 2024 season is currently underway. This week was the perfect moment for it to happen. The Hokies need to regroup before attempting to win at least one of their last two games in order to qualify for the bowl because injuries are mounting on both sides of the ball and they are currently 5-5. We’ll start this edition of Virginia Tech Football News with head coach Brent Pry’s injury report on a freshman provided on Wednesday.
Brent Pry gives Gabe Williams update
Star linebacker Gabe Williams was injured and spent a considerable amount of time on the field during the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s 24–14 home loss to Clemson. He was taken to a nearby hospital in an ambulance that was brought onto the field. Surgery would be necessary for the injuries, but it would take time, according to Pry.
Williams’ father had a medical issue following his accident, therefore it’s being postponed, Gabe wrote on social media on Wednesday. I’m praying for a speedy recovery for Gabe and his father.
J.C. Price praises Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Edge Antwaun Powell-Ryland was named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award on Wednesday. With 13, he is tied for the most sacks in the nation. J.C. Price, the defensive line coach and associate head coach, praised the University of Florida transfer.
Price declared, “Antwaun Powell-Ryland is the nation’s best defensive player.”
Powell-Ryland had two four-sack games this season against Boston College and Old Dominion. Bruce Smith, a former Hokie legend, was present when he did it. Powell-Ryland will undoubtedly continue to perform on Sundays.
BC quarterback to enter transfer portal
After learning earlier this week that he was benched by first-year coach Bill O’Brien, Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos will use the transfer portal. It was the seventh quarterback the Hokies have defeated this season who was either injured or benched against Tech.
