The Green Bay Packers’ top two free-agent signings this offseason have performed as well as expected. Safety Xavier McKinney is currently tied for the NFL lead in interceptions, while running back Josh Jacobs ranks third in the league with 762 rushing yards. Jacobs is also third in rushing attempts (158), tied for third in runs of 20+ yards (six), and fifth in rushing yards per game (84.7).
Jacobs has been especially crucial to the Packers’ offense, filling in when quarterback Jordan Love was sidelined with injuries. In Green Bay’s second game, the first Love missed due to a sprained MCL, Jacobs rushed for 151 yards on 34 carries. Later, when Love sustained a groin injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacobs took on the offensive load, running for 127 yards on 25 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
However, during Green Bay’s third game, a matchup against the Tennessee Titans, Jacobs received a hefty fine from the NFL.
Green Bay Packers Running Back Josh Jacobs Was Fined Over $45,000 for Lowering His Head
In the game against Tennessee, Jacobs carried the ball 14 times for 43 yards, while backup quarterback Malik Willis stepped up to help secure a Packers victory in the second game Love missed. However, Jacobs received a fine for lowering his head on a particular play, though no flag was thrown on the field for this action.
According to Pelissero, the fine amounted to an astounding $45,020, making it one of the NFL’s largest fines this year. For comparison, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was fined just over $20,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Bo Melton and for gesturing at Packers fans while exiting the field.
Naturally, Jacobs appealed the fine.
This incident took place nearly six weeks ago, but the NFL has only recently made its final ruling on Jacobs’ fine.
Jacobs’ fine has now been rescinded, meaning he won’t have to pay it. The league acknowledged that fining him was a mistake in the first place.
