The NFL trade deadline has officially passed, and all 32 teams are now set to finish the season with their current rosters. Whether your team is in playoff contention or in rebuilding mode, this period always brings excitement with a flurry of rumors and major trade updates, sometimes involving star players.
One of the most notable trades yesterday saw star cornerback Marshon Lattimore moving from the New Orleans Saints to the Washington Commanders. With the Commanders currently leading the NFC East, it’s no surprise they added a top defensive player to bolster an already strong unit.
In contrast, the Buffalo Bills remained relatively quiet, with few trade rumors surrounding them. However, following their Week 6 victory over the New York Jets, the Bills made a big move by acquiring wide receiver Amari Cooper to strengthen their receiving corps—likely their single big transaction of this trade period.
Still, with the Bills sitting at 7-2 and a clear need at defensive tackle, it’s a bit surprising that GM Brandon Beane didn’t pursue additional help in that area. The only other deadline news for the Bills was their release of safety Mike Edwards.
Buffalo Bills not trading for DT help will haunt them in postseason
Stopping the run has been one of Buffalo’s biggest challenges this season. Through nine games, their run defense has allowed an average of 123 yards per game, with opponents surpassing 100 rushing yards in five of those games. The situation has worsened with rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter and recently Dawuane Smoot both placed on IR.
Additionally, Ed Oliver has missed a few games with a hamstring injury, leaving the Bills even more vulnerable at defensive tackle. Despite these setbacks, Buffalo did not address this position at the trade deadline. While the Bills’ 7-2 record points to a strong season so far, their playoff prospects could be threatened if teams exploit their run defense, keeping Josh Allen and the offense off the field.
