During Game 2 of the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers witnessed their $700 million investment laying on the dirt, writhing in agony after an ugly slide. Shohei Ohtani’s dislocated shoulder and torn labrum were diagnosed within a few hours. He continued to play in the World Series, delivering one of the more daring performances of the 2024 calendar year. The Dodgers said that Ohtani has taken the first step toward becoming totally healthy again in 2025.
“Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed successful arthroscopic surgery on Shohei Ohtani today in Los Angeles to correct a labrum tear caused by a left shoulder dislocation on October 26. “He is expected to be ready for spring training,” the Dodgers said on Tuesday night. Ohtani had a tear in his UCL late in the 2023 season. The two-way great had Tommy John surgery and returned to hitting in 2024, but was unable to pitch. Nonetheless, shortly after Ohtani underwent elbow surgery, the Dodgers committed $700 million to sign him in free agency.
Now, a year later, Ohtani is back under the knife. He’s projected to fully heal and return to the field and mound by the start of the 2025 season. The only issue here is Ohtani’s ability to continue his right elbow recuperation and rehab while out with a left shoulder injury. He may be out for weeks, unable to throw bullpens, while recovering from labrum surgery.
