On Saturday afternoon, Virginia Tech’s football team led 14-3 at halftime against Syracuse in an important ACC matchup in New York. During the break at the JMA Wireless Dome, Hokies kicker John Love went out to practice his kicks, inadvertently interrupting Syracuse’s band performance. This move appeared to upset Orange head coach Fran Brown, who addressed the incident on Monday when speaking with the media. Brown openly expressed his frustration, criticizing Love’s actions as disrespectful.
“Our band was out there doing their thing, and he was kicking in the middle of our band, which I don’t like,” Brown explained. “Those kids go to class, practice every day, and do all of that, so when I saw and heard it, I was very upset; don’t insult our band by doing such things. I’m glad everything went the way it did, but I’m eager to go to Boston College.
“No disrespect to their coach (Brent Pry) or anything like that, but there are certain things you just don’t do—you don’t disrespect the Syracuse band when they’re out there doing their thing,” said Coach Fran Brown. Clearly irked, Brown seemed satisfied that his team managed a comeback victory, beating Virginia Tech 38-31 in overtime after a strong 28-point second-half performance to push the game to extra time.
On Monday, Love posted an apology on his X account for his actions. However, judging by Brown’s reaction, the apology didn’t undo the impact, as Syracuse got the last laugh with their win over the Hokies. Now, Brown and his team turn their attention to Boston College for an upcoming game in Chestnut Hill, while Love and the Hokies set their sights on Clemson in Blacksburg, aiming to secure bowl eligibility against a challenging ACC opponent.
