Just In: Highly Rated 4-star Fast Rising Prospect Shocks Syracuse with Commitment Decision

A promising 2025 prospect from Florida, recently narrowed his list of potential college destinations to five schools, after having taken an official visit to Syracuse over the summer. According to reports by top On3 national reporter Joe Tipton and others, the 6-foot-8 forward’s final choices are Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Cincinnati, and Oregon, all of which he has visited, along with Syracuse and other programs.

Abaev, a highly regarded four-star wing in the senior class, is ranked among the top 30 prospects nationally by multiple recruiting services. Wishing him the best as he continues his recruitment journey.

Syracuse extended a scholarship offer to Abaev in late April. His stock has risen significantly in recent months, thanks to impressive performances for SOH Elite’s 17U team in the Under Armour Association (UAA) league during the spring and summer.

The player has praised his growing relationship with Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry, who watched him in action during the UAA circuit in the late spring, an NCAA live period. Abaev also made an official visit to Syracuse in late August and attended the football team’s season opener against Ohio.

Abaev currently stars at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which is expected to compete in the Atlanta-based professional league Overtime Elite during the 2024-25 season as Fear of God Athletics.

Australian guard Luke Fennell commits to Syracuse basketball
Luke Fennell

Earlier this week, Syracuse secured a verbal commitment from 2025 combo guard Luke Fennell, a 6-foot-6 prospect from Melbourne, Australia. The Orange also have 2025 commitments from five-star forward Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., and three-star wing Aaron Womack from the Milwaukee area.

As for other 2025 targets, the primary focus for Syracuse appears to be four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony from New York City. He has included Syracuse in his final three choices and is expected to make a college decision in November, according to recent reports.

Additionally, four-star big man Asher Elson, another New York City native who will compete in Overtime Elite during the 2024-25 season, received an offer from Syracuse in mid-April. Elson recently mentioned to On3 analyst Jamie Shaw that he might visit Syracuse soon, although he’s also contemplating a move to the 2026 class.

Last weekend, 2026 five-star guard/forward Alex Constanza from Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., took an official visit to Syracuse. His father, Ed Constanza, shared that the visit went well. Currently, Alex is considering reclassifying to the 2025 class, though no decision has been made yet. Syracuse remains a front-runner in his recruitment.

In a conversation on Thursday night, Ed Constanza noted that his son and Shon Abaev are close friends. However, Abaev’s decision to leave Syracuse out of his final five doesn’t affect Alex’s recruitment process.
