The New York Rangers forward had some terrible news from the team, as he was told he would be sent down to the AHL to improve his talents.
The New York Rangers announced today that forward Matt Rempe will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack, the team’s AHL affiliate. This should provide him a greater chance to get more ice time and improve his talents, potentially leading to a career in professional hockey. Rempe will be placed in a position with the Wolf Pack and new head coach Grant Potulny where he can improve his game while still bringing his distinctive physical style to the rink.
Rempe has played two games for the Rangers this season, averaging 5:39 of ice time per game and no points or penalty minutes. Despite only appearing in a few games, he left a lasting impact on fans last year with his aggressive style of play and desire to drop the gloves. Rempe’s body exudes vitality, and his followers like it. He has carved out a unique niche for himself in the lineup, even when he just plays a few minutes per night.

Rempe was selected in the sixth round by the Rangers in 2020 and has demonstrated his promise at both the NHL and AHL levels. The 22-year-old forward had a very successful season in the AHL last year, scoring 12 points in 43 games with Hartford and two more in 17 games with New York. Most notably, his impact was noticed in his physicality, as he recorded 177 minutes of penalty time in 71 games across both leagues, including 11 postseason appearances. In terms of play style, he was more aggressive than his opponents.

Rempe has 14 goals and 22 points in 96 AHL games, but he is improving with more development time. He will return to Hartford hoping to improve his offensive game while remaining a strong physical force. Playing in the AHL may provide Rempe with more opportunities to gain confidence with the puck through handling and playmaking, building out a skill set under head coach Rick Potulny.
With Hartford off to a great 2-1-1 start, Matt Rempe’s next opportunity to contribute will be on October 25 when the Wolf Pack face the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. It’s a key time in his assignment to round out and improve his game in preparation for another NHL call-up later this season.
