Just In: Dolphins to Trade for $40M QB Amid Tua Tagovailoa Controversy

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is returning to the Miami Dolphins, but his future remains uncertain after multiple documented concussions since entering the NFL in 2020. The Dolphins currently hold a 2-4 record, having gone 1-3 with backup quarterbacks during Tagovailoa’s absence.

With limited depth behind Tagovailoa and ongoing injuries at the position—Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley both sustained injuries since Tagovailoa’s absence—Miami is considered a strong candidate to pursue a quarterback before the league’s November 5 trade deadline. ESPN’s Seth Walder suggested the team should aggressively pursue Bryce Young from the Carolina Panthers, who was benched earlier this season in favor of veteran Andy Dalton.

“The Dolphins could acquire Young at a low point in his value, placing him behind Tagovailoa with hopes that McDaniel can revive the 2023 first overall pick’s career,” Walder wrote on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

“If Tagovailoa misses more games, Young would provide a better option than the current backups, who have a combined 15.3 QBR. The potential upside of a trade is considerable, as Young could serve as valuable depth or even be traded again for profit if he performs well. Given that the initial cost would likely be low, the risk is minimal.”

Carolina (1-6) has named Young the starter for this week’s game against the Denver Broncos after Andy Dalton was involved in a car accident. Although no emergency medical care was required, Dalton’s injuries were serious enough to rule him out for the upcoming game. Dalton’s recovery could affect Young’s trade availability, but there are still nearly two weeks before the deadline, allowing Dalton some time to heal. Young has over two years left on his $37.95 million rookie contract.
