Virginia Tech’s biggest offseason addition has been thrown from the roster.
The Hokies men’s team announced that Hysier Miller had been “permanently released” from the program. The school said the action was “due to circumstances prior to Miller’s enrollment at Virginia Tech.”
“Temple transfer point guard Hysier Miller has been permanently dismissed from the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program due to circumstances that occurred previous to his enrollment at Virginia Tech. The university will make no more comment on this topic, according to a statement.
Miller’s circumstances occurred when he was attending Temple.
Miller, from Philadelphia, Pa., played three seasons at Temple, starting the last two. The Owls were probed for unusual betting behavior at their games.
Sources: Virginia Tech guard Hysier Miller, a transfer from Temple, is no longer with the program. This relates to the Temple gambling inquiry that was underway last March, as @SInow reported at the time: https://t.co/n56N7Upew8

In March, Temple games were reported for questionable betting behavior. In one game, Temple moved from being a 1.5-point underdog to finishing as an 8-point underdog to UAB. The point-spread swing occurred on the same day. The Owls lost the game by 28 points. Temple failed to cover the spread for the second game in a row.
According to SI reporter Pat Forde, Miller’s release from Virginia Tech is tied to the gambling situation.
Miller averaged 15.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game as a junior last year.
