The Colorado Avalanche may be looking to address their goaltending issues after a shaky start to the 2024–25 NHL season. With Alexandar Georgiev and Justus Annunen struggling to find consistency, the team could already be exploring potential solutions. On the “32 Thoughts” podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman discussed the situation, suggesting Anaheim Ducks goalie might be a trade target for the Avalanche. While head coach Jared Bednar has publicly supported Georgiev, Friedman believes the front office is likely considering alternative options.
“I just find it hard to believe the Avalanche aren’t evaluating the goalie situation,” Friedman said. Although Bednar expressed confidence in Georgiev, calling him “our guy” and stating he trusts the goalie’s ability to bounce back, the team’s management may be less certain.
John Gibson, who has been the subject of trade rumors as Anaheim rebuilds, has yet to play this season due to an appendectomy. Despite his $52.2 million contract with a $6.4 million cap hit over two more years, Friedman suggested that the Avalanche could make the financials work if they believe Gibson is the right fit. “If you think the player is good enough, you’ll find a way to manage the contract,” he said.
Gibson, who has a career .910 save percentage and 2.90 goals-against average over 11 seasons, could be a strong addition for Colorado. Georgiev’s current stats—.810 save percentage and 4.99 goals-against average—indicate a clear need for improvement, and Annunen, though better, has not been enough to stabilize the situation. According to Friedman, it’s unlikely the Avalanche will remain passive in addressing their goaltending concerns.
