JUST IN: Mike Tomlin doesn’t hold back on why he’s benching Justin Fields

Justin Fields led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 4-2 record in the first six games of the 2024 season, tallying 10 total touchdowns with only one interception. Based on these numbers, many believe the former first-round pick should continue as the starter. However, head coach Mike Tomlin has decided otherwise. Reports indicate that Russell Wilson, who has recovered from a lingering calf injury, is set to start this weekend. Some are puzzled by the decision, but for Tomlin, the reasoning is clear: the Steelers need a stronger passing game.

While the statement may sound harsh, it is not without merit. The Steelers’ offensive success has largely come from a favorable schedule, a strong defense, and Fields’ rushing ability. Tomlin understands that without a reliable passing game, the team is unlikely to succeed in the playoffs. Though Fields has been efficient, his passing numbers lack explosiveness; he has accumulated 1,106 passing yards and five touchdowns in six games, projecting to 2,878 yards and 14 touchdowns for the season. He has also contributed five rushing touchdowns, but history shows that relying heavily on rushing quarterbacks has not led to postseason triumphs—Lamar Jackson being a prime example.

Tomlin’s decision to switch to Wilson reflects the belief that, despite Wilson no longer being at his peak, his experience as a passer could elevate Pittsburgh’s offense. With Wilson under center, the Steelers might stand a better chance against top teams like Kansas City, Buffalo, and Houston come January. It’s unfortunate for Fields, but this situation echoes the same concerns that led to his departure from Chicago.
