Injury Update: Phillies Confirms Top Stars Return

Following a tough defeat in Game Four of the NLDS, the Phillies’ 2024 season concludes, bringing numerous offseason questions.

Top pitching prospect returned to the mound  in the Arizona Fall League, marking his first game action since his injury. In his two-inning start, the 21-year-old threw 29 pitches, reaching triple digits with his fastball while allowing two runs and striking out two batters.

His first pitch clocked in at 98 mph, and he hit 100 mph multiple times in the opening inning. He managed to retire Mets veteran Jeff McNeil, who is using the AFL to rehab a wrist injury in hopes of making the Mets’ NLCS roster, and struck out Giants first-round pick Bryce Eldridge. However, Tigers catcher/first baseman Josue Briceño homered off Painter to start the second inning. Painter also issued a four-pitch walk, allowed a single, but then induced a double play and finished the inning by striking out the last batter he faced.

Most importantly, Painter came through the outing healthy.

Painter initially injured his right elbow in March 2023 while competing for a spot in the Phillies’ starting rotation. At just 19 and fresh out of high school, he seemed to be the favorite for the No. 5 starter role before the injury. The Phillies attempted a conservative rehab approach, but he ultimately underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023. The team has been cautious in his recovery, aiming for a full return in 2025.

If he remains healthy, Painter could once again contend for a rotation spot in spring training. However, the Phillies might opt for a cautious approach, gradually building up his pitch count and stamina. After all, he has made just five starts at Double-A and hasn’t pitched at Triple-A yet.

That decision will come in about four and a half months. For now, the Phillies are simply pleased to have such a key part of their future back on the mound.
