Breaking: Huge Trade Sees Red Wings Acquiring Star $51 Million In Blockbuster

The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff drought, and one proposed trade involves them acquiring a star goaltender.

In this proposed trade, the Detroit Red Wings would acquire star goaltender, a proven NHL starting goaltender, while sending Ben Chiarot, Andrew Copp, Marco Kasper, a 2026 first-round pick, and a 2026 second-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks.

star goaltender who is in the sixth year of his eight-year, $51.2 million contract, would bring stability to Detroit’s goaltending. His presence could also allow the Red Wings to explore moving Ville Husso or Cam Talbot for additional assets. Despite some inconsistency, likely due to his time with the Ducks, Gibson is a three-time NHL All-Star and would give top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa more time to develop in the AHL.

In return, Detroit would part with two draft picks and three players. Chiarot, who is in the third year of his four-year, $19 million contract, plays on Detroit’s second defensive pairing and contributed 20 points in 17 games last season. Copp, signed to a five-year, $28.13 million contract in 2022, has not quite met expectations. He currently plays on the Red Wings’ third line, and his departure would free up valuable cap space. Last season, he tallied 33 points in 79 games.

Lastly, Detroit would also trade away forward prospect Marco Kasper, the eighth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Currently in the AHL, Kasper notched 35 points in 71 games last season.

Gibson Mentioned As Trade Candidate

As the Anaheim Ducks continue their rebuild, John Gibson’s name has surfaced in trade discussions. Over the summer, Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek acknowledged the interest in Gibson, stating to *The Athletic*, “John’s still a really good goalie. Obviously, there’s a market for goalies out there.”

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun also confirmed that trade talks involving Gibson took place, though they did not lead to a deal. While the team is comfortable keeping Gibson, they remain open to trading him if the right offer emerges.

Red Wings Carrying 3 Goalies on NHL Roster

The Detroit Red Wings entered the season with three goaltenders on their roster: Ville Husso, Cam Talbot, and Alex Lyon. This is uncommon for NHL teams, and prior to the season, Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman mentioned that the situation was discussed during training camp.

“Everybody’s healthy today,” Yzerman said. “Ville hasn’t played in quite a while, so we need to see how he performs. Then we’ll consider our roster decisions. If everyone remains healthy, we’ll have to decide whether to keep three goalies or make a move, but we’ll see how things unfold.”

Husso is in the final year of his three-year, $14.75 million contract. Talbot joined the team on a two-year, $5 million deal this offseason, while Lyon is in the last year of his two-year, $1.8 million contract.
