The Los Angeles Dodgers are hopeful that All-Star player will return to the lineup for Game 3 of their NL Division Series against the San Diego Padres.
He exited Game 2 after five innings on Sunday night, with the Dodgers falling to a 10-2 defeat at Dodger Stadium, evening the series at 1-1.
He felt discomfort in his sprained right ankle and was replaced at first base by Max Muncy, with Kiké Hernández taking over at third base.
During his two at-bats, He struck out once and hit a fly ball. In Game 1, he had two hits and one strikeout.
Roberts noted that Freeman was “still sore” during the Dodgers’ off-day workout at Petco Park. “He’s receiving treatment. I don’t have any additional updates. Beyond that, I think he’s very appreciative of having a mental break today,” he said.
“The expectation is that he’ll play. If he can’t, then he won’t,” Roberts said. “But if he’s ready to go, he’ll be in the lineup.”
Freeman, who is 35 and has been named an All-Star eight times, mentioned that this is his first time spraining an ankle. He was told that this type of injury typically requires four to six weeks on the injured list.
As the No. 3 hitter behind leadoff Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, Freeman provides a strong bat and also plays a key role defensively at first base.
During the regular season, Freeman missed 15 games due to injuries and a medical emergency involving his young son.
