The No. 1 Texas Longhorns will begin SEC play at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Mississippi State Bulldogs without their starting quarterback, who was officially ruled out just over 90 minutes before kickoff. Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Pete Thamel had reported that Ewers was not expected to play.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian stated that he would decide on his availability, but no official announcements were made, and no details emerged until Pete Thamel’s report, followed by the pre-game injury report.
Ewers sustained an oblique strain during the 56-7 victory over UTSA two weeks ago and was listed as questionable on the first three SEC-mandated injury reports released by the school.
As a result, redshirt freshman Arch Manning will make his second career start against the Bulldogs in Austin. Manning was impressive in relief of Ewers against the Roadrunners but threw two interceptions and struggled with his efficiency in the win over Louisiana-Monroe, showing some expected growing pains.
Below is the injury report the school released.
