NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that former South Carolina football standout is expected to return to action for the San Francisco 49ers. He missed last week’s game due to a calf injury. Although he’s officially listed as questionable on the team’s injury report, Schultz indicated that the dynamic playmaker intends to suit up despite that status.
In the 49ers’ first two games of the season, he recorded 13 receptions for 164 yards, along with a rushing touchdown and 10 first downs. After a strong start to the 2024 season, his return positions him to chase another Pro Bowl appearance. With star running back Christian McCaffrey sidelined, Samuel’s role is likely to be crucial, provided he’s physically able to manage it.
During his time with South Carolina football, was one of the most electrifying players to ever don the garnet and black.
Samuel holds the school record for the most kickoff return touchdowns in a career. In 2017, he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns on his only two attempts of the season and remains the only player in program history to return a kickoff for a touchdown in three different seasons. He scored one on special teams in 2016, two in 2017, and one in 2018. Remarkably, these four touchdowns came from just 26 total return attempts, giving him a better than 15% chance of scoring on a kickoff return between November 19, 2016, and November 3, 2018.
As the Gamecocks’, Samuel was also an elite wide receiver. He ranks in the top 11 in school history in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, despite playing fewer games than any player above him on those lists, except for Sidney Rice. Demonstrating his versatility, the South Carolina native also scored seven rushing touchdowns on just 25 carries and even threw for two touchdowns.
