Latest Update: Red Wings Acquires Another Top Star In A Blockbuster Deal

The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff drought, and one intriguing trade proposal involves acquiring one of the league’s top goalies.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a user suggested a blockbuster deal that would send Jeremy Swayman from the Boston Bruins to the Red Wings. The proposed trade looks like this:

Red Wings acquire:
Jeremy Swayman

Bruins acquire:
Sebastian Cossa
Ville Husso
Jonatan Berggren
Andrew Copp
Marco Kasper
2026 first-round pick

This deal would be significant as Detroit goes all-in for one of the league’s best goalies, who is still without a contract. In exchange, Boston would receive a top goalie prospect, an NHL goalie, additional players, and a first-round draft pick.

Swayman has been a restricted free agent since July 1 and has yet to sign a contract extension. The user proposing the deal also suggested that the Red Wings would sign Swayman to a seven-year contract worth $8 million per season. Last season, Swayman posted a record of 25-10-8 with a 2.53 GAA and a .916 SV%.

Key elements of the return for Boston would be the first-round pick and Cossa, who is considered one of the top goalie prospects in the NHL, having been drafted 15th overall in 2021. While he could potentially see NHL action this season, it’s more likely he will debut in the league next year.

The other goalie the Red Wings would part with is Husso, who is entering the final year of his three-year, $14.25 million contract. He could form a goaltending tandem with Joonas Korpisalo.

Additionally, the Bruins would gain forwards Copp and Berggren, who could serve as middle-six options for Boston. Finally, Kasper, selected eighth overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, has the potential to make the NHL this season.

Swayman’s Agent Fires Back at Bruins Offer

On September 30, Boston’s front office held a press conference to kick off the 2024-25 NHL season, during which Bruins president Cam Neely claimed that Jeremy Swayman had turned down a $64 million contract extension. However, Swayman’s agent, Lewis Gross, responded on social media, asserting that such an offer was never made.

“Normally, I do not release statements or discuss negotiations through the media. However, in this case, I feel I need to defend my client,” Gross stated. “At today’s press conference, $64 million was referenced.”

He continued, “This was the first time that number was discussed in our negotiations. Prior to the press conference, no offer was made reaching that level. We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy. We will take a few days to discuss where we go from here.”

Red Wings GM Doesn’t Expect Team to Use 3 Goalies

Detroit signed Cam Talbot in free agency and has both Ville Husso and Sebastian Cossa, who could make the NHL roster this season. However, Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman expressed his desire for the team to maintain just two goalies on the NHL roster.

“I don’t see us really doing three goaltenders throughout the course of the season,” Yzerman stated. “That wasn’t really the plan last year, either, but injuries dictated that. We kind of hesitated at the end of the season regarding what we wanted to do, and then Ville got hurt, which resolved the issue.”

The Red Wings will kick off their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
