The Pittsburgh Penguins played their fifth preseason game at PPG Paints Arena, falling 2-1 to the Detroit Red Wings.
Detroit’s Nate Danielson scored the game-winning goal at 17:11 of the third period. Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry started in net, making 17 saves on 19 shots.
Penguins forward left the game in the second period after taking a hit near the Penguins’ bench along the neutral-zone boards. He recorded one shot in 5:26 of ice time, with his last shift ending at 7:09 of the second period. After the game, coach Mike Sullivan said Ponomarev was being evaluated for an undisclosed injury.
After a scoreless first period, Rickard Rakell put the Penguins ahead with his first preseason goal at 1:34 of the second period, assisted by Evgeni Malkin and rookie Harrison Brunicke, who registered his first point since being drafted 44th overall by the Penguins this past June.
Detroit quickly responded 74 seconds later with Amadeus Lombardi tying the game on a wrist shot past Jarry. The score remained tied until late in the third when Danielson’s close-range wrister sealed the win for Detroit.
With 1:49 left, the Penguins had a power-play opportunity after a tripping penalty on William Wallinder but couldn’t capitalize.
The Penguins will play their next preseason game on Thursday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
