There may still be an opening for top goalie prospect on the Penguins’ roster. On Monday night, starting goalie Alex Nedeljkovic was set to play the entire game against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena but exited at 13:04 of the first period.
Blomqvist stepped in to finish the remaining minutes of the period. Nedeljkovic appeared to be in pain after facing a couple of close shots, grabbing his midsection before knocking the net off its moorings and leaving the ice. Interestingly, the Red Wings’ broadcasters failed to notice the incident at the time.
According to the Penguins’ team reporter, Alex Nedeljkovic skated down the tunnel and did not return to the bench after leaving the game.
Last season, Nedeljkovic started the final 15 games, recording a .902 save percentage. Pittsburgh Hockey Now plans to provide updates following the game, as head coach Mike Sullivan is expected to give more information on Nedeljkovic’s status.
