The Phillies made the move before the regular season’s final game because outfielder Johan Rojas is sick and outfielder Austin Hays has a strained back, and the organization wants to ensure it has enough players.
Gilbert is ineligible for the National League Division Series roster unless there is an injury, but he will remain in Philadelphia to continue working out. The Phillies are hoping Hays will be okay, when they need to finalize their NLDS roster.
10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
60-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
Turnbull threw 52 pitches in a live BP on September 27 and two innings in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on September 22. He is expected to return during the postseason. Turnbull allowed two runs on two hits (one of which was a home run) and one walk while striking out two for the IronPigs. His sinker averaged 92.4 mph, while his season average was 93.2 mph.
It is unknown whether Turnbull will be ready by the start of the postseason, but the Phillies believe he might be a viable alternative at some time.
Turnbull last pitched for the Phillies on June 26, when he left after only three innings in Detroit due to a “little grab” on his second-to-last pitch. He was diagnosed with a right lat strain and started on the 15-day IL the next day. On August 17, Turnbull was transferred to the 60-day injured list. (Last updated on September 28.)
RHP Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery; No. 2 on Phillies Top 30 Prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Painter threw another live BP on September 17 in Clearwater, Florida, and it went well, according to manager Rob Thomson. Painter had general soreness in his right arm in August, but this is normal for pitchers coming from Tommy John surgery. It is possible that he may pitch in the Arizona Fall League, but no announcement has been made. Painter will still be only 21 years old on Opening Day next year. (Last updated on September 19).
INF Rodolfo Castro (right thumb UCL repair)

RHP Luis F. Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Possibly 2025
Ortiz had Tommy John surgery on July 11 and will miss the rest of the 2024 season as well as the most, if not all, of the ’25 season.
Ortiz was originally placed on the injured list due to a damaged left ankle sustained on March 30. He had begun to recover from the injury when the Phillies recalled him from his first rehab assignment in late April due to discomfort in his right shoulder.
That had subsided enough for Ortiz to begin another rehab assignment on June 11, but his recovery was interrupted once more when he began suffering forearm soreness, prompting more testing that showed the need for surgery. On July 5, Ortiz was transferred to the 60-day injured list. (Last updated on July 11).
