Major Breaking: Dolphins To Reunite With $118M QB To Replace Tua Tagovailoa

Former Miami Dolphins quarterback is waiting for an opportunity to start again this season. Ironically, his best chance could come from his former team. Now 36, Tannehill spent seven years in Miami, starting all 88 games he played. He missed the entire 2017 season due to an ACL tear but still managed to throw for over 20,000 yards, 123 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions during his time there.

After leaving Miami following the 2018 season, he joined the Tennessee Titans, where he quickly earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year, a Pro Bowl nod, and led the team to the AFC Championship Game. Tannehill completed his four-year, $118 million contract with the Titans in 2023, after which the team transitioned to Will Levis as their starter for 2024.

According to Ari Meirov of 33rd Team, as of September 12, the Green Bay Packers—who are missing quarterback Jordan Love—had not reached out to Tannehill because he wasn’t interested in a temporary fill-in role. “When Tannehill became a free agent in March, his plan was to be more like Joe Flacco last year,” Meirov noted. “He didn’t want to sign as a backup and wait for an injury. He’s waiting for a team to lose its starting QB for the season so he can step in and take over. He still wants to play, not sit.”

Miami may or may not provide Tannehill with that opportunity, as current starting QB Tua Tagovailoa is out for at least the next three games with another concussion. Backup Skylar Thompson struggled in a 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week and is now injured, leaving the Dolphins with Tim Boyle or Tyler Huntley as potential starters.

Huntley, a 2022 Pro Bowl replacement, has only appeared in 20 games, starting just nine, all as a backup to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. With no clear solution at quarterback, Tannehill might consider returning to Miami, especially with the possibility that Tagovailoa could be sidelined for the remainder of the year. Tannehill’s career stats include nearly 35,000 passing yards, 216 touchdowns, and 115 interceptions. His projected market value this season is $7.7 million, which the Dolphins could adjust to reflect the games he’s already missed.
