The Atlanta Braves won’t be getting the reinforcement they hoped for. Manager Brian Snitker announced on Tuesday that third baseman Austin Riley will miss the rest of the regular season and postseason. Riley, who broke his hand after being hit by a pitch in mid-August, hasn’t healed enough to have his cast removed, making it impossible for him to return in 2024.
Riley, 27, is a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger with over 30 home runs in each of the past three MLB seasons. He played a key role in Atlanta’s 2021 World Series win but was sidelined on August 18 with the broken hand, ending his season after 110 games and 19 home runs.
Currently at 85-71, the Braves are 1.5 games behind the final NL Wild Card spot. Despite getting Ozzie Albies back from injury, the team faces a tough path to the playoffs and will rely on Gio Urshela to fill in at third base.
