University of Miami head coach J.D. Arteaga announced on Monday that Chris Dominguez is joining the coaching staff as an assistant.
“Chris is one of the top young coaches in the sport,” said Arteaga. “With his experience at the Major League level, he brings a wealth of knowledge to our program. Having grown up a Hurricanes fan at The Light, Chris is uniquely positioned to mentor the next generation of Canes baseball stars. I’m excited about the impact he will have on our student-athletes’ growth and development.”
Dominguez is returning to Miami after spending the past three years at Bellarmine, where he was the head coach for the last two seasons. A native of Miami, he previously served as an assistant coach for the Hurricanes during the 2021 season.
Following a stellar college career at Louisville, Dominguez spent 11 years in professional baseball (2009-19), with time in the Major Leagues for the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds.
“This is one of the most prestigious college baseball programs, and I’m thrilled to be part of such a great tradition,” Dominguez said. “I get to coach some of the best players in the country, and I get to do it in my hometown. The goal is to bring a fifth national championship to Coral Gables, and I’m confident J.D. is the one to lead us there.”
In over 1,000 professional games, Dominguez hit .263 with 134 home runs and 592 RBIs.
In 2010, his first full professional season, he hit 21 homers and drove in 101 runs for the Augusta GreenJackets, the Giants’ Class-A affiliate.
Three years later, he hit 21 home runs and stole 21 bases for Triple-A Fresno.
Before being selected in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, Chris Dominguez made his mark on the Louisville baseball program.
As a third baseman, Dominguez earned two All-American honors and played a key role in leading the Cardinals to their first-ever College World Series appearance in 2007.
During his freshman season, he hit 15 home runs and drove in 61 RBIs, earning Freshman All-America Honorable Mention recognition. He was named MVP of the Columbia Regional and followed up with three home runs in the CWS.
In 2008, Dominguez was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year and earned third-team All-American honors after batting .365 with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs.
As a redshirt junior in 2009, he posted a .345 average, 25 home runs, and 82 RBIs, securing BIG EAST Player of the Year and first-team All-America honors.
Out of Gulliver Prep High School, Dominguez was initially drafted in the 17th round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He was drafted again in the fifth round in 2008 before signing in 2009.
Dominguez and his wife, Shannon, are parents to two children, Patrick and Murphy.
