Latest: Payton Thorne Makes His Feelings Clear on Hank Brown Amidst Auburn football QB controversy

When asked for words of wisdom for teammate Auburn football quarterback Hank Brown during a media scrum, Payton Thorne offered passive aggressive advise. Very passive-aggressive counsel.

“I’m gonna be talking to him about staying off his phone, quite honestly,” Thorne stated when asked what advise he’d give Brown. One media person was taken aback when he said such a thing, but then he went on to say that he doesn’t want Brown to check at social media and see what others are saying.

Thorne, on the other hand, clearly has little interest in being Brown’s mentor. Thorne stated what he did with a chilly expression on his face, obviously unhappy that the attention was now on Brown, who had taken over his starting role under center. Brown started Weeks 3 and 4 against New Mexico and Arkansas, respectively, but was benched against the Hogs after three interceptions.

However, Thorne appears to be returning as QB1.

Hugh Freeze’s postgame comments following the 24-14 loss to Arkansas at Jordan-Hare Stadium appear to indicate that Thorne will continue to be the starting quarterback moving forward. Thorne’s clean-up efforts delighted Freeze, who even commended him on his Auburn career so far.

“I thought it was a good ball,” Freeze remarked about the interception (via AL.com). “We made the correct read. I have to catch that one. Payton played well.

“He has done this before. He has played in these types of environments. Payton has played admirably up to this point. We simply need to catch the football when we have wide-open men running. We haven’t executed today and have surrendered over nearly all of our possessions.”

Overall, Tiger fans will be disappointed with this development. Freeze appears to have tied his career on the Plains to Thorne, with a 3-6 record in SEC play through Week 4 of the 2024 season.
