Breaking News: Marlins loses Another Top Star To Injury

Marlins left-hander  was expected to be activated from the injured list to start Sunday’s game against the Braves, but he suffered a setback during his rehab. MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola reported that Garrett “felt something” in the back of his elbow after a bullpen session on Friday, effectively ending his 2024 season. He will undergo testing and focus on returning healthy for 2025.

His 2024 season has been disappointing. The 27-year-old was anticipated to be one of the team’s key starters after a solid previous two seasons, during which he posted a 3.63 ERA (124 ERA+) and a 3.64 FIP over 247 2/3 innings. However, he struggled with shoulder issues that sidelined him for the first six weeks of the season.

After returning to the rotation on May 12, he had mixed results, with several rough outings despite some impressive performances, including a four-hit, complete-game shutout against the Diamondbacks. Ultimately, he finished the season with a 5.35 ERA over 37 innings across seven starts, despite strong peripheral stats: a 2.5% walk rate and a 51.3% ground ball rate, leading to a 3.82 FIP and a 3.46 SIERA.

Garrett was placed on the injured list in late June due to elbow soreness, later diagnosed as a forearm flexor strain. Although he began a rehab assignment earlier this month and excelled in the minors with 15 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings, his recent setback means he will not return this season.

The Marlins are now looking ahead to 2025 for Garrett’s comeback. This year has been challenging for Miami, with a 57-97 record, but there are reasons for optimism next season. The returns of pitchers Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Jesús Luzardo, and now Garrett could bolster the rotation. Additionally, Connor Norby has started strong since being acquired from the Orioles, and there are a few promising offensive pieces like Xavier Edwards, Jake Burger, and possibly Kyle Stowers, suggesting the team may turn things around if they can enhance their offense.
